Cooper Hewitt: City of Neighborhoods | NOLA

2009. Classroom environment in which Thaddeus Zarse and I headed a 3-day discussion/ workshop on the steps involved in approaching the design process.

We were contacted by the Cooper Hewitt to head a workshop of 24 K-12 teachers from all around the US and teach them the loose rules of the design approach. In turn, they would be able to take these concepts and apply them to their classroom curriculum.

With the outlined process of determining the design approach, they were given the assignment to observe the Make it Right Neighborhood of the Lower 9, collect data, formulate a question and then apply solutions to the problem they decided to take on.

Below are our steps on the design process in their workbook:
1. Review the challenge
2. Investigate the problem and/or opportunity
3. [re]Frame the problem
4. Generate possible solutions
5. Edit and develop ideas
6. Share and evaluate your process and ideas
7. Final the solution
8. Articulate the solution and process

Below are images of our quick and dirty how-to manual to approaching the Design Process. The booklet was printed front and back on 3 pages, folded lengthwise and stapled as a simple, cheap print solution and was distributed as reference materials to our students.
